Caring for an elderly parent can be one of life’s toughest challenges. But for Cindy Greer, it also provided the inspiration to start Transition With Care. The senior move management company helps adults age fifty‑five and older downsize and relocate to smaller home settings in and out of the Charlotte area.
Greer launched the company with a good friend and former work associate in 2009 and hired two employees within the first year. The two women divided up the workload with Cindy taking on the CEO role, while her friend served as CFO. Unfortunately, the business hit a major stumbling block just as it was getting out of the gate.
Cindy started her business right as the Great Recession hit. “The housing market tanked, which was crucial to our business,” she said. Cindy’s business partner didn’t have the financial resources to tread water until business picked up again, so she left in 2012 to pursue other employment. “I was faced with whether to close the business or stick it out.” What made her decide to soldier on was the support of her employees. “Their belief in my vision helped me to hang in there, and they’re still with me today!”
Yet without her partner, Cindy was tasked with overseeing all aspects of the business. Rather than do it alone, she hired consultants like BeeSmart Social Media, The BT Factor, and Caja Holdings to manage daily social media, human resources, and accounting. This allowed Cindy to focus more on overall business development.
The strategy paid off. Transition With Care has experienced double‑digit growth over the last several years, and Cindy now has seven on her team. “In order to grow your business, you have to step into that ownership role,” she said.
