Zhenia Martinez: A Family Affair

Zhenia Martinez, Las Delicias BakeryTo say that Zhenia Martinez is etched deep into the fabric of Charlotte’s east side is an understatement. The second-generation owner of Las Delicias Bakery carries on a twenty-year tradition of creating sweet and savory baked goods off Central Ave.

When her Mexican immigrant parents opened the bakery in 1997, it was the first of its kind in town. The menu originally served mostly Mexican fare but has expanded into a broad range of Latin tastes. Various speciality bakers helped expand the tastes and client base. They provide catering and delivery of products to bakeries and restaurants throughout the southeast. It’s a true family affair with Zhenia and co-owner Manual Betancur balancing community involvement, business networking, and two elementary-aged children.

“When my father retired,” explained Zhenia, who took ownership in 2011, “he said that it would allow flexibility for my family. And it has. The store has allowed me to be there for them and with them, all the while making a living.”

“Don’t be afraid to try new things, new tastes,” she suggested—good advice in her bakery or in life. Besides her own artisan breads and goodies, her avenue is filled with opportunity to try new things. Some Mexican favorites that come to her are Tacos El Nevado and Three Amigos Grill and Cantina. For Vietnamese she suggests Lang Van, and for yummy Middle Eastern fare La Shish Kabob on N. Sharon Amity.

The hustle and bustle of the neighborhood begs the issue of improved walkability. “I see a lot more people on foot around here,” she observed and attributed it to a cultural preference to walk to dinner or shopping.
